We’re very pleased to announce that the Falkland Islands radar is up and running thanks to the great efforts and help of many at the British Antarctic Survey, the University of Leicester, in the Falklands, and in the SuperDARN community.

Work began in November 2009 with a site visit by Dr. Mervyn Freeman (BAS) to meet the main contractor and set out the site. Concrete foundations were laid by a sub-contractor in December 2009 and the mast erection was completed on 5 February 2010 as part of a 4-week build contract led by Chris Thomas (Leicester). The radar electronics were then commissioned and tested on-site by Neil Cobbett and Nick Alford (BAS) between 8 and 26 Feb, with help from Mick Parsons at Leicester and Paul Breen at BAS, amongst others.

The first data was lovingly received on 14 February and after some initial testing has been operating to the SuperDARN schedule since 19 UT on 26 Feb 2010.

Congratulations to all involved!
